FORT SILL, Oklahoma (Nov. 19, 2020) - Retired Sgt. Major Billy Grant, age 80, commemorates his first Navy birthday. It was 1958, he was 18 and a trainee at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. It was the Corps' 183rd birthday and to celebrate the recruits were taken to a movie theater and watched The Sands of Iwo Jima starring John Wayne.
On the 245th Marines Birthday on November 10, 2020, Grant was the oldest Marine here and was served the first cake during the Fort Sill Marine Artillery Detachment (MARDET) celebration.
"To know where we're going, we need to know where we're coming from," said Grant, who retired after 27 years of service as an infantryman. "We have a great Marine Corps that is improving every day because they have good men and women."
The scholarship gave the youngest Marine, Pvt. Ethan McQuvey, age 18, St. George, Utah.

"He was like he handed me the cake, 'Hey, carry on the legacy,'" said McQuivey, who will be a student on the Fire Direction Control Specialist course. "It means a lot to me. I love it."
2. Lt. Hannah Malone, a Marine Artillery Officer Basic Course student, has been with the Corps since August 2019. He attended Norwich University in Vermont on a Navy ROTC scholarship.
"Our birthdays are definitely one of the highlights of the year," said Malone, who is from Manchester, New Hampshire. "I'm just excited that we're still having our cake and eating it (despite the pandemic)."
As part of the celebration, about 20 Marines made uniforms from the Revolutionary War to today's battle. The program is narrated by Gunnery Sgt. Michael Daly, leader of the MARDET Cannon Crewman Course, narrated the battle as each Marine took center stage and the 77th Band provided music from the period.

As part of the tradition, the 13th Naval Commander Major General John Lejeune's 1921 birthday message was read by Capt. James Kenney, MARDET Instructor.
"In every battle and conflict since the birth of our Corps, the Marines have fought with the utmost distinction, winning new honors at every opportunity, until the word 'Marine' means the highest measure of military skill and soldierly virtue," Kenney recited.
The tradition of cutting the cake for the Marine Corps birthday began in 1952 with the 20th Commandant Lt. It started under General Lemuel Shepherd Jr., Tavuchis said.
"It's a symbol so rich and deep in meaning that it's not only revered but has become fundamental to our ethos," he said. "Surrendering the most significant traditions of our Corps is a powerful tool that reinvigorates our spirit, sharpens our resolve and propels us forward in an unbreakable bond."

"There is no excuse as it remains our solemn duty to protect our Marines, our families and our friends," Tavuchis said. "I cannot thank the staff and families enough for their continued resilience during this difficult time. We continue the mission.”
Afterwards, Marines and guests ate steak, green beans, potato salad, buns and watermelon at picnic tables on the MARDET parade grounds.
